Why Do People Lie
Luisa F. Samayoa Professor Class Date Why do People Lie If you are truthful in a relationship, nothing hurts more than hearing a lie from your partner; sometimes knowing the truth may hurt even more, yet still, in the longer run, a lie causes more damage than truth. Mark Twain once said, ââ¬Å"If you tell the truth, you don't have to remember anything. â⬠Lying is not as simple as telling the truth versus falsifying it. It is deeper than that. It may well be about creating a whole new set of truths that only the liar knows of. Today, I reflect on an interesting topic: why do people lie?Four years ago, I tried to understand why people lie, so I have been researching and learning from my friends and own experiences. Lying is a constant action that is used in a daily day. So according to psychology today, much of the research shows that we tell 2 to 3 lies every 10 seconds. So, itââ¬â¢s about 9:30 now, suggest that most of us should have lied. Letââ¬â¢s take a look, how many of you have lied in the last 72 hours? Think backâ⬠¦ Have told a fib, or a big one? How many have told a little lie out there? (Raise Hand) All right these are all the liars, make sure you pay attention to them. (Smile) No, that looked good, it was about 2/3 of you.The other 3rd. didnââ¬â¢t lie or perhaps forgot, or youââ¬â¢re lying to me about your lying, which is very devious. (Smile) SHOW STADISTICS Lying has been used in the past and is not a recent behavior that has been adapted, as a result has been carried through evolution. Here we have Diogenes with his lantern. Does anyone knows what he was looking for? A single honest man and he died without finding one back in Greece. Also, we have Confucius in the East who was really concerned with sincerity. So let me talk about new deceptions we have been tracking. They are called: The butler, Sock-puppet and the Chinese water.Letââ¬â¢s start with the Butlers. * On my way, anybody ever written on my way? (Raise hand) the n youââ¬â¢ve also lied. We are never on our way. We are thinking on going on our way. * Sorry I didnââ¬â¢t respond to you earlier, my battery was dead. Your battery wasnââ¬â¢t dead! You werenââ¬â¢t in a dead zone! You just didnââ¬â¢t want to respond to that person that time. * Youââ¬â¢re talking to someone and you say: ââ¬Å"Sorry, got work, gotta goâ⬠But really, you are just bored, you want to talk to someone else. In order to succeed everyday, people have created an action, this action is called Lying and is used for different purposes. It appears some lie for no reason at all, while many lie with great reasoning, some lie for a cause, and many build a cause to lie. Let me tell you, it has been a fantastic month for deception and Iââ¬â¢m not even talking about the high profile journalist caught for plagiarism get publicity & better pay, a young superstar writer whose book involves so many made up quotes that theyââ¬â¢ve been pulled from the shelves to be known and make money; a NY Times expose on fake book reviews (Chinese water) to attract/gain publicity. Now of course, not all deception hitââ¬â¢s the news. Much of the deception is every day.People lie for many reason and some are: to save their face (example), Lying to shift blame (example), Lying to avoid confrontation, Lying to get oneââ¬â¢s way (Example), to hide information (This one can be used for good reasons or bad ones. Example good/bad), matter of habit or to gain attention. But can you detect a liar? Many people say they can sometimes and they are able to tell by seeing through their eyes, tone of voice or their body movement. Now that you have understand why people lie and that this action has been taking place since long time ago, I will tell you some of its benefits. Are there benefits on lying?Of course, telling a lie for personal benefits is always wrong, but if it can save lives or using it to donââ¬â¢t hurt someone else is worth it. One of the best e xamples of a great benefit lying cause is about the teacher in Connecticut. Now that you know a little about why people lie, you are able to be aware of many lies people have been telling in order to achieve their objectives. As a result, around the world people lie for different reasons, some can be positive or negative. All this lies are being used by people to create a buffer, because we live in a 24/7 connected world and we just want to succeed in life.
Communication skills in a group interaction Essay
Communication is one of the most imperative things of being a human being. If we were not able to communicate, we would not be able to interact with others; therefore we would most likely be unsuccessful in leading our lives to their full potential. There are two types of communication, which are verbal and non verbal. So we can use our voice along with non verbal communication like your eyes, gestures and voice tone to name a few. Everything that we do can give off a positive or negative vibe about yourself, which could potentially enhance or worsen communication. LOOKING AT EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION The job of a health and social care worker is to enhance the quality of peopleââ¬â¢s lives. They must allow the clients to be in control and independent. This is why it is imperative that care workers are aware of what demands the clients have on them, and the appropriate communication skills they need to use to improve their life. Abraham Maslow theory which said ââ¬Ëthe goal of ones life was person growthââ¬â¢ would show that everyone should aim to develop their own ability and potential. However, before this stage can take place there are such things which need to be taken into account, the main thing would be ââ¬Ëdeficiency needsââ¬â¢. see more:explain how distress may affect the way an individual communicates These have been put into a pyramid which is shown below: It is important for any health and social worker to posses certain vital skills. They need to understand how important it is to communicate and interact with other, along with knowing and understanding their own individual needs. Basically Maslow (1) theory is explaining how an individual person should strive to develop their individual ability and potential. Before the individual can develop their own potential the levels in the pyramid will need to be met. This deficiency needs play a role in fulfilling individual needs, and it is therefore it is imperative that social and health workers are fully aware of these deficiency needs. Communication that takes place in an early years setting has to that of a high standard to enhance the potential of the clients, especially when working with children because they tend to pick up on things much easier. Therefore teachers need to be trained, so they are fully aware of all their communication skills they use, this even means from the way they dress to the manner in which they speak to the children. Everything has to be adapted to the clientââ¬â¢s level, like the manner in which they talk. Usually they would talk with some degree of difficult language; however they simply cannot talk to the children how they would a fellow member of staff. They constantly need to change from one role to another, and they need to make sure that this does not become mixed up. COMMUNICATION WITHIN A GROUP SITUATION Communication skills within a group interaction are just as imperative as communication on a one to one basis. A set of people in todayââ¬â¢s language is considered as a ââ¬Ëgroupââ¬â¢. A member of a group may posses the sense of belonging and this gives the members of a particular group and ââ¬Ëgroup feelingââ¬â¢. This group feeling is sometimes known and described as a group identity. This occurs in a caring, or working situation where people belong together and would identify the as belonging in a group. There are two types of groups, primary and secondary, which have been identified by social scientists. The is thought that a primary group of people are that of people who know each other and feel that they belong together while as the secondary group is people who only have something in common. A primary group in care tend to share the subsequent features; Some groups require a lot of team leadership or effort before they are able to work well together; however there are groups, which naturally come together, and this enables them to work well. There have been many theorists, which have studied the way people start to work together. People need to get to know each other and learn about them before a group can have a sense of belonging. It is also thought that ever group goes through a period in which the group struggles before they unite and work effectively together. One of the well-known theorists in which to explain the stages was that of Tuckman (1965). Tuckman suggests that most groups go through a process involving four stages before they can become effective. (1) * Forming- this is the first stage of group formation. The introductory stage is most likely to happen when group members first get together. There may be some people who are unsure of the reasons why they are attending the meeting and the purpose of the group may not be clear and at times prejudice and stereotyping may occur and be expressed within this stage. Storming ââ¬â within the group a ââ¬Ëpower struggleââ¬â¢ may occur, this is where individuals will contest against each other for the role of leader of the group. Arguments may occur over how the group should work, who should perform certain tasks. Some groups can fail within stage two or individuals within this group may decide to leave as the do not feel comfortable within the group. Within a working group, this can occur and staff will sometimes refuse to communicate with certain members of the group, this is known as group storming. Norming ââ¬â common beliefs or norms can be developed within the group at this stage. People are now beginning to trust each other more and have now developed clear roles for each other. Norms are the shared expectations of the group on one another. These norms enable the group to be able to work together. * Performing ââ¬â the group can now start to perform well because the group shares the same values and norms. People may feel that they are comfortable and belong to the group, and the group morale may be high, which contributes positively to the group. GROUP SEATING PLANS: Sometimes it is noticeable on the way in which the group sits are stands to whether it is in it ââ¬Ëperforming stageââ¬â¢ or it is working as a successful interaction as a group. If you are working within a group discussion it is imperative that all the participants of that interaction are made aware of one another and they can see and hear all the other participants. This is why the circle is one of the favourable seating patterns because all the participantsââ¬â¢ faces can be seen in this structure and the body language is clearer. This can help to promote the interaction and skills used within the communication. Being seated within a circle may sometimes suggest to the participants that everyone is equal to each other. However there are many other seating patterns which can be structured in a way to suit specific interactions. For example a carer or teacher may like to sit within the circle half way, or in the front of a half circle. This will give out the message that all of the participants are equal however the carer or teacher will be taking the lead role of the interaction. MY GROUP INTERACTION: Where my interaction took place: For my group communication, I have decided to revisit my school which I had previously looked at whilst doing communication skills within an early year setting. My school that I will be revisiting is Buxton County Primary school. I would like to do my group communication with class 2 because I feel that it is an appropriate task to do with them, although I think that reception class is a bit too young. My interaction took place with 6 pupils, within class time. I decided to make Thank you cards with them, because it was just after Christmas and I feel that this task is suitable. Purpose of my interaction: The purpose of my group interaction with the group was to promote interaction between the pupils and also with the members of the group. I am also looking to show an observer some of the communication skills I have learnt, and also to show that they are valuable and in a group situation, successful. The group were working together to produce Thank you cards for their family, and sharing their ideas to help others. I wanted the children to be able to help each other to make the cards and choosing the individual materials, which were needed to make their cards. I also would like to make this a fun activity for the children, in which they will get some learning experience out of too. I am also hoping that the pupils will be willing to ask me questions about the activity and that I will be able to give sufficient answers. Mrs Paterson (the classroom teacher) decided to choose five pupils in which I was going to work on my selected activity with. Mrs Paterson said that she chose children which she knew had previously worked together, and have been successful in interacting with each other. I think that this would be quite helpful for me because there was a smaller likelihood of misbehaving in the interaction. Setting and layout: My interaction took place within the year 2 classroom at Buxton Primary School. I decided to do it within class time, so there were no irregularities to the childrenââ¬â¢s timetable. The classroom was brightly coloured, with lots of pictures, posters, art work, cards and writing the children had done themselves.

Workplace Feminism
Logan Rogers ENG 102 Childless Women; Victims At Their Jobs? In todayââ¬â¢s economy there are many women beginning to enter the workforce; mothers and childless women both. However, are childless women victimized in the workplace? Often times working mothers have to work half days or leave the workplace suddenly to go care for their children. Childless women tend to feel that working mothers are given priority to requested time off.The result of these aspects are childless women feeling that they have to take on more hours, denied personal and vacation time, resented by working mothers, and not offered special benefits that working mothers receive. When one commits to a full time job, he or she only plans to be working an average of forty hours per week. However, that is not always the case with childless women in the workplace. Studies show that childless women are working more hours on average than working mothers. They feel that extra work is often put on their shoulders, a cons equence of working mothers having to leave the workplace due to time conflicts with their children. A situation where this is a problem is when working on a group project. Every member of the team is given their own responsibilities and if a working mother has to leave because of her child, the rest of the team is burdened with her tasks.Kristen Bossert, a graphic designer who is sick of feeling like a second-class employee, states, ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m the one who always gets stuck at work,â⬠she says, ââ¬Å"If you have no kids, you have no excuses. â⬠(Backaitis) Many childless women feel that workplaces are less strict on working mothers because they have to balance between work and family. In an article by Wendy Williams, she presents statistics that show females without children work an average of more hours per week: ââ¬Å"As can be seen, for each child a female professor has, she works slightly less at her academic job each week.A female professor with 3 children wor ksâ⬠¦2. 5 hours less than her childless female colleaguesâ⬠(Williams) Therefore childless women feel that working mothers get special treatment in the workplace because childless women have to take on extra work and more hours when mothers must leave to take care of their children. On top of taking on extra hours, working childless women often feel that they are deprived of personal and vacation time to which they are entitled. When asked about the subject, Lori Hanes, a working mother of two children, said ââ¬Å" In my workplace, childless women continuously complain that working mothers get priority to vacation time due to wanting to spend time with their children. â⬠The following situation shows that working women get precedence over childless women: When she asked her manager if she could leave early to go to a doctorââ¬â¢s appointment, Diana Antholis expected to get an unequivocal yes. After all, her co-workers were always coming in late or taking off ahead of schedule because their kids needed to get vaccinated, didnââ¬â¢t feel well at day care, were in a performance at school and so on. So when the boss gave her a hard time and suggested that her medical appointments be scheduled for her ââ¬Å"own time,â⬠the media-agency associate almost lost it. First she thought of asking when her ââ¬Å"own timeâ⬠was, given that she typically put in more than 12 hours a day. And, second, she wanted to know why the mothers she worked with were getting time off for the asking. (Backaitis) It may not be fair but that does not mean it is not widespread. As the workplace has become more family-friendly over the years, there has been an unintended consequence: complaints from childless women that they are second priority to those who have chosen to have a family. Some childless workers complain that their lives outside of work seem to be irrelevant to both their coworkers and their employers. Childless workersââ¬â¢ completion of a triat hlon, participation in a community chorus, or volunteerism do not merit the same informal celebration as little Johnnyââ¬â¢s first Little League hit.The Center for Talent Innovation performed a study that shows that 46 percent of childless women say that their outside commitments are perceived as less important at work than that of working mothersââ¬â¢. Sylvia Ann Hewlett, president of the Center for Talent Innovations, states this: ââ¬Å"Not only are [working women without children] denied easy access to flexibility, but theyââ¬â¢re made to feel like their lives arenââ¬â¢t significant and they get very little recognition of their non-work activities. (Hewlett) Childless women feel that working mothers often get priority to requested time off over them and that their achievements outside of work are not important. Supreme Court Justice, Sonia Sotomayor, Homeland Security Secretary, Janet Napolitano, and former Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice, are all highly respect ed, successful women. They are all also childless women. Greater success may be one reason for the resentment that childless women feel working mothers have towards them. Studies show that childless women are more successful professionally than working mothers.Childless women also report feeling constantly judged by working mothers because they do not have children. Findings show that 25% of professional women without children feel that working mothers refer to them as hardened career women for not being mothers. Childless women also feel envy from working mothers due to the significant amount of less stress that they have to deal with because they are not balancing a full time job and a family. Another reason for this resentment is the disparity in wages between working mothers and childless workers.Kelly Hagen stated in her article, that ââ¬Å"Mothers are 44 percent less likely to be hired than women without children, and they are paid $11,000 less, according to a 2005 study from Cornell University. â⬠(Hagen) Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner, Executive Director of MomsRising. org in an interview with ââ¬Å"Good Morning America. â⬠stated that, ââ¬Å"Women without children make ninety cents to a man's dollar, while women with children make only seventy three cents to a man's dollarâ⬠. Less stress, greater success, and more pay are all reasons that are causing resentment of childless women by working mothers. Many companies offer an array of benefits for their full time employees. However, many of these benefits favor soley working mothers rather than all women in the workplace. For example, companies give working mothers benefits that go beyond their essential needs. These include maternity leave and phase-back programs, programs that allow working mothers to work part-time for full-time pay after childbirth. Many companies also offer working mothers what are called family days. These paid days off are designated for use if a child is sick or has som e kind of appointment. Therefore, childless women have less availabe paid time off than working mothers. New mothers must lactate three or more times per day. Several companies are now giving these new mothers designated times throughout the day to take care of this issue and special rooms are being put in place for this reason only. This special care is resulting in three more breaks during the day for new moms, not childless women. Childless women are never granted such generous benefits like these, making the benefits between them and working mothers unequal. Working women who have chosen not to have children often feel victimized in the workplace.Statistics show that they work significantly more hours on average than working mothers and that working mothers resent their greater amount of success. Childless women also feel that working mothers have priority to paid time off and company benefits. The consequence of all of this is growing tension between childless women and mothers in the workplace. Work Cited: Hagen, Kelly. ââ¬Å"Childless Women Succeed More. â⬠ABC news. N. p. , 22 Aug 2012. Ethical Decision Making Essay
Abstract Ethics is the branch of philosophy that examines questions of morality, or right and wrong. In this paper we will discuss the philosophical approaches used in ethical decision making. The two approaches that will be elaborated on are the utilitarian approach and the universal approach. Several questions will be addressed, (1) what is the utilitarian and universal approach? (2) How do we use them in the ethical decision making process and (3) examples of how it relate in the field of Criminal Justice? When conflict arises itââ¬â¢s not always possible to decide who is right or wrong; however our moral responsibility is to resolve problems to the best of our ability. The utilitarian and universal theories are two of several philosophical approaches or methods that can be implemented when making these types of decisions (Zalta & Geoff, 2008). The Utilitarian Approach: Utilitarianism is one of the most powerful and persuasive approaches to normative ethics in the history of philosophy. The utilitarian approach to ethical decision making focuses on taking the action that will result in the greatest good for the greatest number of people. It also focuses on the consequences of the course of action and policy, as well as the affects it has on the well-being of the people directly or indirectly impacted by that action or policy. This approach is used to promote the welfare of everybody by maximizing benefits and minimizing harm (Zalta & Geoff, 2008). For instance, when faced with a situation your first thought or question is what should you do? Once you assess the situation then you would apply which ethical decision is the best action to take. If you implement the utilitarian approach you did so with the intent of producing the greatest balance over harm. Utilitarianism offers a relatively straightforward method for deciding the morally right course of action for any particular situation we may find ourselves in. In the criminal justice field this approach can be widely used. To discover what we ought to do in any situation, we first identify the various courses of action that we could perform. Second, we determine all of the foreseeable benefits and harms that would result from each course of action for everyone affected by the action. And third, we choose the course of action that provides the greatest benefits after the costs have been taken into account (Velasquez, Claire, Shanks, & S.J). The Universal Approach: The universal approach to ethical decision making is similar to the Golden Rule. The golden rule is best interpreted as ââ¬Å"Treat others as you want to be treatedâ⬠. Universalism argues that knowledge can and should be applied to everyone in every similar situation (Williams & Arrigo, 2008). This approach can be taken in two steps. First, determine whether or not a particular action should be applied to all people under all circumstances. Second, decide if you would be willing to have that same rule to you. This approach claims that ethical principles hold for all and not for some, it is for everybody without exception (Williams & Arrigo, 2008). In other words if you act a certain way towards another and are not willing to be treated in that same regard than you are in violation of the universal rule. To apply the universal approach correctly we need to take into consideration the effects our decision making have on other peopleââ¬â¢s lives. We also have to be able to imagine ourselves in the other personââ¬â¢s shoes on the receiving end of the action. Imagine you are a police officer in pursuit of what seems to be a drunk driver, while in pursuit the drunk driver hits a pregnant woman crossing the street. What do you do, do you stop for her and leave a drunk driver on the road, or do you call the accident in and continue to pursue the drunk driver to keep him from potentially killing himself and others. The utilitarian approach would more likely call for back up and continue after the drunk driver, but if we use this same example and compare it to the universal approach, the question then becomes what would you want done to you. Both philosophical approaches are infused with flaws, the use of ââ¬Å"utilitarianâ⬠thinking is not always clear of what form of action should be taken or if the action you took will have a favorable outcome for the majority. It is difficult to judge what decision will supply the best way to respond to a situation. The universal approach unlike the utilitarian bases its decisions on the facts that the action taken is best for everyone regardless of the situation or the difference in people. My choice between the two is somewhat tossed, because my belief is that you should do unto other as you would want done to you, but at the same time my desire to ensure the greatest number of success is important to me as well. Within the Judicial system decisions are made with or without the input of others; however it is our moral obligation to ensure that we make the best ethical decisions that we can, because every decision somehow directly or indirectly affects someone else. EBay Corporation Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
EBay Corporation - Research Paper Example Additionally, the robust economic performance and the potential of the company makes it attractive. The company makes revenue through a multifaceted system of charges for services, listing merchandise features, and a final value charges for sales profits by sellers. The U.S. centered eBay charges from $0.1 to 2 dollars as from 2012 November based on the reserve or opening price, as an assertion charge for a simple auction-style listing devoid of any adornments. The final charge sums up to 10% of the overall amount of the auction, which is the charge of the product plus transport charges (Marketwatch: Technology, 35). Additionally, eBay possesses the PayPal payment system that has charges of its own. This PayPal platform enables buyer protection as it protects the cash one spends if an individual does not receive the products ordered or he or she receives the wrong products, then this platforms allows one to get his or her cash back. Furthermore, the company is still sitting attractiv ely. According to (Hasker and Sickles, 33), eBay booked over 15 billion dollars in the year 2002, far obscuring Amazonââ¬â¢s 4 billion dollars. Its stock although not unaffected by the dot-com crash, it has not been destroyed like numerous other high-flying concerns. Actually, eBay enjoys a marketplace capitalization of $24 billion, and recently its stocks extended to 52 weeks while still high. Most significantly, eBayââ¬â¢s business model has confirmed its worth and carried on to flourish even as the companyââ¬â¢s management discovers new avenues. The first-mover benefit allowed eBay to take over the online sale space. The alleged network effect has bred an acute mass of consumers, a group distributed to sellers and buyers. Moreover, its vanquished competition makes eBay more attractive as the company has benefited from on the network effect of a larger magnitude than any other e-commerce business. The fact that its critical amount of consumers establishes an ever-expandin g scope of influence similar to a magnetic field.

Analysis of the Show 24 - Essay Example The show's uniqueness stems from the character relationships, the script, dialogue and attention to detail. The themes are handled in such a manner that the viewer is compelled to watch every twist and turn whether the shows are about kidnappings, bomb threats, personal vendettas, assassinations, or terrorist attacks. This show is best described as the most innovative, ground-breaking television show of the past 50 years. The reason for this is the fact that it uses split screen cameras, and a real-time format to create the elements of a quality made show previously unseen in other TV shows. As the hero is put through his paces, viewers learn to care about him as more of his life and his past is revealed. Playing Jack Bauer, Kiefer Sutherland is perfect for the role, displaying professionalism as the agent as well as showing the more human side of the character. The show also follows Jack's colleagues at the Counter Terrorist Unit in Los Angeles, as well as the actions of the terrorists and particularly an important political figure such as a Senator or President played by Dennis Haysbert whose acting, is superb. The support team of the show, among others, played Carols Bernard as Tony Almeida and Elisha Cuthbert as Kim Bauer, also play a major part in each episode.Ã Ã

Relational database solution Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Relational database solution - Essay Example Therefore this need has led to introduction of various data storage solutions. One very well known model for database management is the rational database solution. A relational data base can be explained or defined as a collection of data or information. The data is then stored in tables where it can be accessed or rearranged in different ways without changing the arrangement of the tables. Relational data base was invented in the 1970 by Edgar Codd at IBM Harrington (2004). The relational database management system is based on the relational model theory. A relational database model has a set of tables which are designed to hold data after collection. The data is arranged and put in categories which have a set order. Each of the tables which are also known as a relation has either one or more data groups in columns. Every row has a set of data for each of the categories and is defined by the columns Harrington (2004). A good example is when an entry in a normal business order database has a table that gives a description of a customer which includes columns for the name, an address and a phone number. In addition there can be another table describing an order with columns for; the product name, date, customer name, the sales price. Therefore any person assigned to use the database can get access the database depending on what information they want to gather. For example a branch office manager might want to view a report on company clients that have bought either a product or a service in a particular date. Many of todayââ¬â¢s businesses rely on their database systems for accurate and up to date information Suad (2005). Without this much needed information business organizations find themselves in tough situations such as strategic planning as well as corporate decision making. On the other hand for it to be useful to a business organization or a firm, it must be accurate, complete and organized in such a way that data can be retrieved when needed and in
